Programs & Services


The Division of Senior Programs provides endless learning and recreational/leisure opportunities for adults 55 or older to age actively. In addition we serve as an information and referral service hub for the older adult community. Our programs and services are broken up into the following categories. Click a heading to learn more.

Silver Sneakers

NEW to the Rocky Mount Senior Center is Silver Sneakers. SilverSneakers by Tivity Health provides access to seniors 65+. Seniors who quailfy for Silver Sneakers will have access to Water Aerobis, Zumba Gold, Senior Stretch, Sweatin’ to the Oldies, Body Craze, YogaLike, our Fitness Area, and the pool.

  • Senior Chef
    Day/Time: Mondays, 2pm-4pm - February 11 - 18- 25, 2019
    February 11- Kitchen Primer/Knife Skills & Sautéed Vegetables
    February 18- A Delicious & Healthy ‘Fish Dish’
    February 25- A Delicious & Healthy ‘Chicken Dish’
    Class Registration Fee: $12.00 each class or $30.00 for all classes.
    Location: Rocky Mount Senior Center
    Description: Class will be instructed by Chef Frank Bookhardt. Chef Frank's cooking classes focus on improving quality of life and longevity with healthy cooking. Students may bring a carry-home food container. All food supplies are included. Register early! Ten (10) slots available in each class.

  • Container Gardening
    Day/Time: Wednesdays, 2pm – 4pm - March 13 – 20 – 27, 2019
    March 13- Flowers
    March 20- Vegetables
    March 27- Herbs
    Class Registration Fee: $12.00 each class or $30.00 for all three classes.br Location: Rocky Mount Senior Center Description: Class will be instructed by Ken White, Master Gardener. Container gardening is fun and a great option for small spaces. In this course, Master Gardener Ken White will demonstrate how to make a self-watering container, as well as present everything you need to know to grow flowers, vegetables, or herbs in containers.   • Beginner Fly Tying
    Day/Time: Tuesdays, 2pm – 4pm - April 2 – 30, 2019
    Class Registration Fee: $30.00
    Location: Rocky Mount Senior Center
    Description: Class will be instructed by John Kroger. This class is designed for anglers who have never tied flies before or who want a refresher. In just a few weeks students will be cranking out terrific flies for spring fishing! Fly tries presented are applicable for catching bream, large-mouth bass, crappie, etc. and include wooly worm, black ant, bend back, clouser minnow, deceiver, popper bugs, and more. Supplies not included. Students need to purchase/bring a fly-tying vise and tools kit and Instructor provides some fly-tying supplies and handouts. Register early! Ten (10) slots available.

Body Craze

Description: Low impact with high intensity, strengthen and tone your body, plus build endurance and balance. Come ready for a work-out and leave feeling strong.

Line Dancing

Description: Feel the beat and move your feet! All levels welcome!

Senior Stretch

Description: Stretch and exercise techniques to work joints and muscles while seated in a chair and standing.

Sweatin' to the Oldies

Description: This class is aerobic based with rhythm. Exercise to your favorite oldies music!

Water Aerobics

Description: 45 minutes of instructor-led, low impact exercise in the shallow water in our heated pool.

Level: Beginner

Aqua Hit

Description: A more intense workout in the water focusing on using water weights & resistance.

Level: Intermediate

Aqua Zumba

Description: Zumba in the Water! Aqua Zumba blends the Zumba philosophy with water resistance. This class offers less impact on your joints because of the water.

Level: Beginner

Description: Yoga-like class focuses on stretching and easing stress to build your core body strength.

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Zumba Gold

Description: Zumba Gold is a modified version of a Zumba® class. The class a lower-intensity, but you will sweat. The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba® choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination.

Stability Class

Description: Exercise to help keep your balance and steady on your feet. Focusing on muscle elasticity & durability specifically for balance.

Day Trips: Can be found on our monthly calendar! We visit various local, regional and national locations such as, museums, novelty shops, restaurants, farmer's market, NC coast, NC mountains just to name a few.

Overnight & International Trips: For further information on dates and cost please visit the center or call 972-1152.

  • Atlanta, Georgia (June 2019) – Deposit of $100 minimum

  • Iceland (October 2019) – Deposit of $100 per person or $200 for couple minimum

  • Biltmore (December 2019) – Deposit of $100 minimum

Education & Presentations

There is a year-round computer class available, you must register in person at the Senior Center. We also have scam alerts, Lunch & Learns, fire & home safety, diabetes classes, fall prevention, various health screenings, and more throughout the year.

Special Events

Annual and seasonal events such as Christmas Lights Tour, Christmas Gala Luncheon, Ice Cream Social, Dinner Theatre, Dances, Black History Celebration Luncheon, Veterans' Luncheon, Senior Tea Party, Summer Blast, National Senior Health & Fitness Day and many more.

Drop-In & Socialize

Walking, computer lab, library, horseshoe, shuffle board, TV/Lounge, Bingo, and cards.

Clubs & Leagues

Our clubs and leagues that are weekly or monthly include bowling, pinochle and book club. As part of our commitment to be a "center without borders" the division serves as a liaison to several local clubs for individuals 55 or older. Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, socialize, and learn about senior issues and happenings. Clubs usually meet once a month. For more information contact the Senior Center.
