First Fridays to kick off in October
Posted on 09/28/2018

Fridays are fun again!

First Friday kicks off a month early this year! Bring the family down to the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences beginning Oct. 5 for First Friday activities. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month through May (except January).

October’s event will feature a celebration of Rocky Mount native, bandleader and radio personality Kay Kyser. There will be opportunities to learn about Kyser, as well as enjoy the Tar River Orchestra Swing Band from 6:30-7:40 p.m.

Bring a blanket or chair to enjoy a showing of “Cars 3” at 7:45 p.m. in the Sculpture Courtyard of the Imperial Centre. The Arts Center will also have live music from Lakota John & Kin, as well as art activities, gallery sketching and more. Explore the new “Rainforest Adventures” exhibit and the planetarium through free admission to the Children’s Museum and Science Center.

New to First Friday this year, the theatre is introducing the local playwright staged reading series that begins at 7 p.m. in the theatre. This is an exciting new addition to our performance arts offerings and will feature "Keeping Score" by Jim Lee and "Gardenia Daze" by Lela Chesson. Each reading will feature one act.

All activities are free.

“We are excited to continue this series again and bring events to the Imperial Centre and downtown Rocky Mount year-round,” Recreational Services Supervisor Sheila Long said. “First Friday is a wonderful event for all ages. There is something for everyone to enjoy.”
