EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
The Emergency Management function of the City of Rocky Mount Fire Department is to provide emergency management planning that encompasses preparation, planning, mitigation, and recovery. Emergency plans for each City department are being developed that will supplement the overall City Emergency Response Plan. A close working relationship with Nash and Edgecombe County Emergency Management agencies has been established and has proven beneficial during emergencies. Emergency management activities for the City provide an additional resource for preparing for and responding to disasters related to natural and manmade events.
TAR RIVER STREAM FLOW GAUGES
The US Geological Survey has installed real-time river and stream gauges throughout the State of North Carolina in order to monitor water levels and flow velocity. These gauges are helpful to emergency services by providing a means to look at river and stream conditions in order to plan for potential flood events. The City of Rocky Mount and the USGS have cooperated to install two river gauges on the Tar River near the City. The Tar River courses through the city limits of Rocky Mount and provides the primary source for drinking water. The river is in the Tar/Pamlico River Basin and drains approximately 777 square miles of terrain in eastern North Carolina.
The upstream gauge (02082506) is located at the Lamons Ferry Bridge on Halifax Road:
The downstream gauge (02082585) is located at the river bridge at Highway 97 (Atlantic Avenue):
Additional river and stream gauge sites for North Carolina can be found HERE. Additional river and stream gauge sites for other locations in the US can be found on the US Geological Survey web site.
