APPA Safety Award of Excellence

The city of Rocky Mount earned the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2013. Rocky Mount earned the third place award in the category for utilities with 110,000-249,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure.

Public Power Awards of Excellence

ElectriCities of North Carolina, Inc. has awarded the city of Rocky Mount with the Public Power Awards of Excellence.

Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)

The city of Rocky Mount is one of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities to earn the Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) recognition from the American Public Power Association (APPA). This award is given to utilities for providing consumers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service. As part of the RP3 designation, Rocky Mount has received the diamond level five times. Diamond level signifies 100 percent of the required criteria were met.

System Operation Achievement Recognition (SOAR)

The city of Rocky Mount received the Gold designation award in the American Public Gas Association’s (APGA) prestigious System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) Program. SOAR is given to natural gas utilities that demonstrate excellence in the four operational areas of worker safety, workforce development, system integrity, and system improvement.

Tree City USA

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Rocky Mount has received this award for 15 years by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Tree City USA Growth Award

In 2018, the City of Rocky Mount was presented with the Tree City USA Growth Award for the fifth time for demonstrating environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care. The Growth Award recognizes new or improved programs and projects across four categories: education and public relations; partnerships; planning and management; and tree planting and maintenance.

Tree Line USA

The Tree Line USA® program exists to recognize best practices in public and private utility arboriculture, demonstrating how trees and utilities can co-exist for the benefit of communities and citizens. The Arbor Day Foundation collaborates with the National Association of State Foresters on this initiative. The City of Rocky Mount has received this award for eleven years because of its ability to deliver safe and reliable electricity while maintaining healthy community trees.

Urban Forest Council Outstanding Project Award

In 2014, the City of Rocky Mount was presented with the Outstanding Project Award for the Downtown Streetscape Project as part of the 2014 Urban Forestry Awards. The annual program recognizes cities, towns, organizations, businesses and individuals for outstanding work to protect and enhance community forests and raise awareness about the importance of urban forestry in North Carolina.
