| The Douglas Block Revitalization Plan includes various uses that support each other and should add to the sustainability and vitality of the area. The housing units add life to a desolate area and also add a need for goods and services. The Commercial space will have the benefit of neighboring customers. The community space will increase foot traffic through by use of the green space and amphitheater. The project is estimated at over $10 million dollars for the shell buildings and another $10 million for up fit. The investment will be a combination of public and private investment. The City has already committed to make infrastructure improvements and a collaboration of banks is being formed to offer CRA loans. This project will create hundreds of jobs and be a stimulus for industry attraction and further economic growth. This project will not only have an impact on the African-American Community by capturing and commemorating the rich history of the area but it will also be an integral part of the City's effort to redefine itself following the decline of tobacco and textile industries. |
